Since the processes that occur in human society can be characterized as irreversible, that happen in situations of intense imbalance, they are precisely the ones that interest the historian of culture in a particular way. (Lotman, 1998, p. 148)

Ю́рий Михайлович Лотман
(Petrogrado, 28/02/1922 - Tártu, 28/10/1993)
The Semiotic Space of Audiovisual Culture Research Group (ECA-USP) invites the academic community to participate in “Semiotics of Unpredictability. International Seminar to Celebrate Yuri Lotman´s Centennial (1922-2022)”. The event will be held presentially and digitally using the structure of the School of Communications and Arts of the University of São Paulo in October 2022.
Semiotics of unpredictability constitutes a study proposal in the field of Semiotics of culture that aims to examine the works of Yuri Lotman dedicated to understanding the mechanisms of culture in its dynamic processes of generating new meanings, new messages, new information. To continue reading, access here.
For the submission of communication proposals, we ask you to send an expanded abstract with up to 1.500 words, with key words and 7 titles of bibliographic references, on the application form until 01th of April 2022. It is expected that the proposal will focus on question of unpredictability by choosing at least one of the following biases:
∙ Critical Transformations of Lotman's Semiotic Thought
∙ Political context of Lotman's translation and reception in the West
∙ Lotman's concept of unpredictability in dialogue with schollars and other theoretical systems
∙ Unpredictability in the causal movement of the historical process
∙ Culture as a system of complexity
∙ Cultural meeting on spatiotemporal boundaries
∙ Cultural and artistic processes according to the logic of explosion
∙ Technological progress as an agent of destabilization
∙ Semiosis of fear and historical processes of irrationality
∙ Chaos and order at the limits of the semiosphere
∙ Unpredictability and explosion in technological-digital culture
∙ Memory of culture as an informational mechanism
∙ Confrontations of untranslatability in hybridisms of intermediality
∙ Indeterminism of communication in contexts of socio-cultural "otherness"
∙ Causality and irreversibility of explosive processes
The Seminar proposed here hopes to reap fruit from the seeds sown by the semiotic cunning of Yuri Lotman's thought.

This new publication in Portuguese is now available, a translation led by Dr. Irene Machado of the book Непредсказуемые механизмы культуры, by Iúri Lotman, entitled Unpredictable Mechanisms of Culture, preserving the fundamental concept of Lotman's semiotic thought of cultural dynamics, in which nothing exists or can be observed in isolation. «Mechanism» concentrates the thought of culture in transformative and unpredictable operation and movement. The translation work arose from research interests in the field of semiotics of culture of Russian extraction at the Brazilian university in dialogue with Latin American researchers and includes the translation of all prefaces and postfaces published in the Russian original and in the different Italian and English versions.
